ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!

I must apologise to my regular reader for missing the deadline for last month’s edition. I’m afraid I got so involved with the Club’s support to the Balerno Music Festival that I forgot the date for submitting my copy. With the bowling season ended, our focus has shifted towards our social activities and we are delighted to have been able to offer the Club as an alternative venue while construction work takes place at the Balerno Parish Church halls. Hopefully, there are now fewer Balerno residents who don’t know where the Club is located!
October is always a busy month for Presentation of Prizes events. Recently, we have enjoyed great nights out at the Water of Leith (WoL) BA Seniors event and that for the West Edinburgh BA Seniors where our delegation was presented with the 2nd Division League Champions Trophy. But the highlights have been our own Ladies and Gents Sections’ Prizegivings where each Section prepared the meal for the other. Despite differing menus it was simply impossible (and would be foolhardy) for me to say that one was better than the other. Each provided delicious meals and I am indebted to all involved for making each night a memorable one.
Limitations of space do not allow me to list all the members who won prizes and some of our members are not too keen to see their names in print (in case HMRC catches up with them?). However, I would like to mention a few. I had to spend much of last night’s Prizegiving consoling Honorary Member Bill Stark who needed a few sherbets (hic!) before accepting that reaching 7 finals and winning less than half of them was a considerable achievement. At least he and John Miller could bask in the glory of winning the WoLBA Seniors Confined Pairs. I want also to praise Robert Douglas who just missed out to Jim Wight in the Club Championship. Robert has had a great season and was a winner in the three other finals he contested. I must also mention relatively new boy David Lawson (a winner with Robert in the 2 Bowl Pairs) simply because he wanted to check that I knew how to spell his name before I wrote this article!
Finally, I am delighted and proud to congratulate Past President Kenny Girdler who has been elected as the successor to Duncan McLaren as the Bowls Scotland Councillor for District 12. Duncan will be a hard act to follow but we all know Kenny will fulfil his new role with distinction and wish him every success.
With festive greetings to all at and reading the C&B News
